With cannabis listed as a Schedule I drug, it can be easy for us to forget that it is simply an herb, and like many other plants, it has incredible healing properties. Since I live in prohibition Missouri, I have begun exploring other herbs and how they impact various aspects of wellness — and today, I'd like to share my findings with you.
Where it All Began
My first introduction to smoking herbs other than cannabis was from Cyndi Koonse, Energy Medicine Practitioner in Columbia, MO. During one of my sessions with Cyndi, my asthma was acting up so she taught me about Mullein, a plant that is known to help with respiratory problems. She even taught me how to identify, bless, and prepare mullein for use. She recommended I make a mullein tea to sip on, but also mentioned that you could vaporize or smoke it — so I of course had to try all three methods out. (See how to make mullein tea here)
Through the end of 2016, I found myself battling chronic sore throats that left me feeling less than fantastic. I also had a friend who couldn't use cannabis but wanted to smoke, so I rolled up some mullein into a little joint for us to share — which led to a random but awesome discovery that smoking a little mullein basically made my sore throat disappear. It quickly became my new favorite remedy for a sore throat at the end of the day; I'd take a few hits off my mullein joint before bed, then wake up feeling ready for the day, with little-to-no pain.
It was then that I posted about mullein on my Instagram, at which time I received two very generous offers from Sweet Flag and Bear Blend to send me some of their herbal blends that contained mullein. I had also already purchased Natural Magic's Ease blend on my own accord, and then acquired Inda Creations' Wild Crafted blend at the Green Lodge Goddess Gathering by The Stoned Housewife. Today, I want to tell you a little bit about each of them.
Now, there are a total of 8 blends reviewed here with 27 different herbs, which is a lot. So, to help you decide which blend would be the best choice for you, I've compiled a chart at the bottom of this post that compares the herbs in each one, listing the health benefits and possible precautions.
Sweet Flag Witch Blends
My favorite part of Sweet Flag's herbal blends is how beautifully packaged (yeah, I'm a #designnerd) they are — opening this box was an exciting and intimate experience! Secondly, I love how versatile the herbal blends are; you can smoke or vaporize them, add them to a bath, or make them into tea.
More information: Every bag contains 20 grams of loose leaf herbs for $10 (which put into perspective just how expensive cannabis is). Made in Pennsylvania.
"Ignite your dreams and relax your body."
This blend was very smooth and light with a floral but not sweet taste.

My favorite part of Bear Blend, outside of their incredibly durable and handy packaging, is their focus on tradition. Their tagline is "Celebrating life through ritual," as the company was originally created by Anthony Singing Bear, a musician with Native American roots, to begin educating others about the history and ceremony of smoking. I also adored how much information their website offered about all of the herbs they use to truly educate their customers about what is in their products.

Wild Crafted by Inda Creations
I acquired this blend unexpectedly, and it turned out to be one of my favorite blends to smoke. It was the only blend without mullein which is a fluffy herb, so it had a very different texture. With clove, mint leaf, and raspberry leaf, it was very minty and hearty with a biting rather than sweet taste. Like Sweet Flag's blends, these herbs can be inhaled, made into tea, or added to a bath for a relaxing soak.
More information: 1/2 oz loose herbs for $10, other blends available. Organically grown in Vermont, USA
Ease by Natural Magics
I stumbled across this blend on Instagram and saw that it could help relieve anxiety, so ordered it myself to give it a try. It was incredibly delicious with an earthily fresh, smooth, and sweet taste that gave nice, calming effects, but it unfortunately made my eyes burn. I'm allergic to many environmental things, including most plants, so something in here specifically didn't work well with my body chemistry (part of the reason I wanted to make the chart below!).
More information: 1 jar (unknown volume) for $15. Medicinal grade, certified organic herbs and flowers.
