My amazing friend Kellen generously recommended me for the opportunity to design for a benefit concert in January 2016. This is an event to benefit Emmylou’s Bonaparte’s Retreat and Crossroads Campus, two non-profit organizations that work with at-risk dogs. Emmylou, Jeff and Buddy are all country singers from Nashville, traveling to Santa Barbara to donate their time to the event. The event will include a wine + beer tasting event, acoustic concert, and dog walks on the beach.
Nashville and Santa Barbara traditionally have completely separate aesthetics; Nashville often has a vintage letter-press feel, whereas Santa Barbara has a more fluid and modern feel. I wanted to combine the two vibes into one design that represented the totality of the event.
Since the event is in California, I focused on bringing aspects of the Nashville aesthetic into a beach vibe. To do this, I focused on incorporating hand-lettering and type layout similar to what you may find on a Hatch-Show print poster with a beach scene and ocean-inspired colors. I did the lettering in watercolor to add an organic beach feel to the letter forms, and utilized a photo I took at the beach a few years back. Can't wait to share it with you once it's all finalized!
When I work on design projects, I am usually listening to music that helps get me in the groove. This time, since I was designing for a concert, I looked up the performers music and acquainted myself! I was unfamiliar with all the artists, so listening to their music while brainstorming and inspiration searching was perfect. The playlist is below for anyone interested!
